Sailing around Mallorca

With cruising itineraries to suit most sailors, a sailing holiday in Mallorca has plenty to offer. Keen sailors can plan an itinerary around the island, families can relax in the sheltered bays on the east coast with white sandy beaches, safe swimming areas and beach restaurants. You can visit the busy fishing harbours of Andratx, Soller and Pollensa or get away from it all with a night on anchor at Cabrera Island Nature Reserve. Since Mallorca is centrally located among Balearic Islands, it is easy to visit Ibiza and Formentera, 45 miles to the south or Menorca, 27 miles to the north-east, with its busy harbour-fronts and quiet anchorages.

Mallorca has 41 marinas, 30 clubs nautics and moorings for 10,000 yachts. Highlights of the sailing year include the King's Cup in August, the Princess Sofia Trophy at Easter, and the Rei en Jaime regatta in July when a flotilla of yachts will recreate the 185-km journey made by Jaime the Conqueror when he landed at Santa Ponsa in 1229.

In contrast to other islands, Mallorca really has everything. You will find long sandy beaches on the east of the island ideal for surfing, sailing and sunbathing, while in the northeast you will find secluded coves and high mountains ideal for trekking and climbing. The island is also a golfer paradise with 18 golf courses, all with excellent facilities. The golf clubs are open all year round, as the temperature rarely drops below 14 degrees in winter.

Palma, the capital, is very cosmopolitan. You will find a wide variety of both international and traditional restaurants and lots of designer shops as well as local handicraft. Palma is also beautiful. It has a wonderful Cathedral overlooking the harbor and the biggest old town in Europe.
